How Young Is Too Young For Music Lessons?

    Share it now!

boy-at-pianoIt is never too early to expose your child to music; Even babies in the womb can gain cognitive benefits from hearing music. Children between the ages of 0-9 have the highest potential for developing a love and understanding of music but knowing the right age at which to start formal lessons or group music lessons can be challenging for a parent.

The most commonly recommended age for starting private music lessons is between 5 and 7 years old. Kids in that age range have developed a bit of classroom etiquette and have begun reading and writing. Both of which are essential tools in the process of learning music in a more structured environment such as private lessons. Children under 5 will benefit greatly from larger group music classes which involve more physical movement and music appreciation.

PBS.org has a great article which goes more in depth on the best ways to encourage your little musician.

“Music is good for the brain”.

We’ve heard this statement so often that it has lost much of its impact. There are high school and college classes on music appreciation which scratch the surface of this topic. The most substantial benefits of music, however, cannot be achieved through mere appreciation. It is only accessed through application, ie; actually making music.

That dusty old guitar in the corner or that out of tune piano is where the magic lies. TIME magazine said it best “It is only through the active generation and manipulation of sound that music can rewire the brain.”

    Happy MIOSM!!

    (Music In Our Schools Month)

Since 1985 March has been National Music in Our Schools Month.”The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children- and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music.” (Missouri Music Educators Association)

Now is a critical time to support school music programs which are often most affected by administrative budget cuts. Visit the National Association of Music Education (NAFME) website for ideas on how to get involved. This years’ theme is “Music Inspires.”

This new method of treatment gives a whole new meaning to the term “music heals”. Doctors in the U.K. at the Institute of Cancer Research are using tonal frequencies to zap cancerous tumors.

The sound wave frequencies are above the audible limit for humans and can kill harmful cells deep inside an organ-while leaving the surface tissue unaffected.

This article in the Guardian provides a more detailed look into the healing power of sound waves; It is definitely worth reading.
