Modern Day Von Trapp Family

Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Only “Sound of Music” buffs will catch that reference. It will always be one of my personal favorite movies. The story of a talented family of singers and musicians based in 1930’s Austria, a very volatile time in our world history. The Von Trapp Family Singers were like a breath of fresh air and their story has been passed on through the generations. Well here’s another breath of fresh air for our own modern day upheavals. The Kanneh-Mason family of musicians.

The Kanneh-Masons came to the awareness of the masses through the hit tv show Britain’s Got Talent. The one and only Simon Cowell labeled them as the most talented family in the world. The Kanneh-Masons are 6 brothers and sisters ranging in age from 10 to 19 years old. They play a mix of violin, viola, cello, and piano mostly in the style of classical music. They have upcoming concerts scheduled in Antigua, North Carolina, Nottingham, and New York City (to name a few).

Star Wars Tribute

Can you imagine meeting your celebrity crush or childhood idol? What would you say? Some people turn into the quintessential fan and lose control of themselves. Others have somehow mastered the art of staying “cool”.

It’s safe to say that these two young men stayed pretty cool under pressure. Bryce Hayashi and Michael Miller were courageous enough to stand in front of the home of their idol (John Williams of Star Wars fame) and perform one of his most notorious compositions; The Star Wars theme song. See below what happens when these brave young musicians fill John Williams’ front yard with music.

Make the Song Your Own

When performing a song that was composed by someone else there are a few different approaches.

One way is to replicate the song note for note as is often done with classical music. Another way is to completely change the feel and genre of the song. These two young Caribbean artists, Conkarah and Rosie Delmah (14 years old), have done just that.

Check out this reggae version of Adele’s very popular song “Hello”.

I dare you not to bob your head to the soulful beat.

Tori Kelly and James Bay

If you missed Tori Kelly and James Bay’s performance at the Grammy’s, do yourself a favor and check it out. This was their first ever Grammy performance and it did not disappoint. Both Kelly and Bay were individually nominated in the best new artist category.

Best “new” artist is a fairly inaccurate term. These artists have been grooming their talents for many many years long before they are given the title of best new artist.

Tori Kelly built a massive YouTube following with 8 years of hard work, over a million followers. James Bay, a British singer/songwriter, caught the attention of a Republic Records A&R after a fan uploaded a video to YouTube of him performing at an open mic in London, and within a week he was signed to the label.

Every day thousands of hopeful young musicians are following in Kelly and Bays’ footsteps posting videos of themselves singing their hearts out. They are on YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and Periscope; using every platform possible in hopes that maybe one day they too can be considered the best new artist.

This year’s Grammy went to Meaghan Trainor who became most popular for her song “All about That Bass” but Bay and Kelly’s live performance definitely left its mark. We’re looking forward to great things from these two talented artists.

Lydian, the 9 year old piano virtuoso.

Lydian Nadhaswaram is an incredibly talented young musician. At only 9 years old he plays the piano, drums, and guitar and practices religiously every day.
