    Modern Day Von Trapp Family

    FacebookTwitterGoogle+Share

Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Only “Sound of Music” buffs will catch that reference. It will always be one of my personal favorite movies. The story of a talented family of singers and musicians based in 1930’s Austria, a very volatile time in our world history. The Von Trapp Family Singers were like a breath of fresh air and their story has been passed on through the generations. Well here’s another breath of fresh air for our own modern day upheavals. The Kanneh-Mason family of musicians.

The Kanneh-Masons came to the awareness of the masses through the hit tv show Britain’s Got Talent. The one and only Simon Cowell labeled them as the most talented family in the world. The Kanneh-Masons are 6 brothers and sisters ranging in age from 10 to 19 years old. They play a mix of violin, viola, cello, and piano mostly in the style of classical music. These young musicians are so focused and driven it’s inspiring to watch. You can find out more about the Kanneh-Masons here www.KannehMasons.com

They have upcoming concerts scheduled in Antigua, North Carolina, Nottingham, and New York City (to name a few).

I’m sure we’ll be hearing lots more about this incredible family.

    Star Wars Tribute

Can you imagine meeting your celebrity crush or childhood idol? What would you say? Some people turn into the quintessential fan and lose control of themselves. Others have somehow mastered the art of staying “cool”.

It’s safe to say that these two young men stayed pretty cool under pressure. Bryce Hayashi and Michael Miller were courageous enough to stand in front of the home of their idol (John Williams of  Star Wars fame) and perform one of his most notorious compositions; The Star Wars theme song.  See below what happens when these brave young musicians fill John Williams’ front yard with music.

    The BEATLES in 2016

Many of us grew up hearing Beatles songs and can appreciate them as a part of American musical history. They were one of the most influential bands in all of pop culture and history.

Few things are more fascinating than watching a younger generation experience old classics for the first time. This video will certainly bring a smile to your face. Dear children of 2016, let us introduce to you….The Beatles (insert manic teenage girls screaming here).

How Young Is Too Young For Music Lessons?

boy-at-pianoIt is never too early to expose your child to music; Even babies in the womb can gain cognitive benefits from hearing music. Children between the ages of 0-9 have the highest potential for developing a love and understanding of music but knowing the right age at which to start formal lessons or group music lessons can be challenging for a parent.

The most commonly recommended age for starting private music lessons is between 5 and 7 years old. Kids in that age range have developed a bit of classroom etiquette and have begun reading and writing. Both of which are essential tools in the process of learning music in a more structured environment such as private lessons. Children under 5 will benefit greatly from larger group music classes which involve more physical movement and music appreciation.

PBS.org has a great article which goes more in depth on the best ways to encourage your little musician.

Sharing a Love of Music, Thanks to John Lennon

If there was anything that would make the most recalcitrant music student excited about practicing, we think the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus would be it.

Children who visit the bus have an opportunity to write, compose, record and sound engineer original songs as well as shoot and edit an accompanying music video and documentary — all in one day! The bus houses more than $3 million in state-of-the art equipment and is staffed with engineers who are more than happy to educate students. Every song is posted on the tour bus’ website and we were particularly impressed with a group of kids from Milwaukee who seamlessly intertwined English and Spanish lyrics while others played the trumpet, violin, drums and more. It’s definitely worth watching!

As adults, we wish we could have access to the instruments, technology and knowledge that the tour bus provides. It makes us wish we were in grade school again!

The bus visits approximately 250,000 children a year and worked with Pomona elementary school children a few months ago. It doesn’t look like there will be another California stop for the remainder for 2014, but the tour bus accepts visit requests on its website.

The tours bus has been in existence since 1998 with the blessing of Yoko Ono, the widow of music legend and Beatle John Lennon.  CBS News recently interviewed Ono about the tour bus and we were struck by one part of the conversation:

“CBS asked Ono: ‘You probably get asked all the time to lend your support and your name and John’s name to all kinds of projects. Why did you decide to support this one?’

‘I think this is one of the most important ones, because the educational situation is not so good and all that,” said Ono. “So, we have to add something that’s really positive.’”

    We agree.
