    Modern Day Von Trapp Family

    FacebookTwitterGoogle+Share

Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Only “Sound of Music” buffs will catch that reference. It will always be one of my personal favorite movies. The story of a talented family of singers and musicians based in 1930’s Austria, a very volatile time in our world history. The Von Trapp Family Singers were like a breath of fresh air and their story has been passed on through the generations. Well here’s another breath of fresh air for our own modern day upheavals. The Kanneh-Mason family of musicians.

The Kanneh-Masons came to the awareness of the masses through the hit tv show Britain’s Got Talent. The one and only Simon Cowell labeled them as the most talented family in the world. The Kanneh-Masons are 6 brothers and sisters ranging in age from 10 to 19 years old. They play a mix of violin, viola, cello, and piano mostly in the style of classical music. These young musicians are so focused and driven it’s inspiring to watch. You can find out more about the Kanneh-Masons here www.KannehMasons.com

They have upcoming concerts scheduled in Antigua, North Carolina, Nottingham, and New York City (to name a few).

I’m sure we’ll be hearing lots more about this incredible family.

    “But I Don’t Wanna Play The Piano….”

“Forcing a child to play an instrument rarely leads to the love of music making we want.”

(Dr. Robert A. Cutietta, author of “Raising Musical Kids”)

I have very mixed feelings about this statement. I was one of those children who’s parents “forced” them to play an instrument. In my family learning to play the piano was not optional for my siblings and me. Practicing the piano regularly was also not optional.

My parents made a deal with me during one of my many rants about wanting to quit. They said that if I could find 3 adults that had quit playing piano as a child and didn’t regret it then they would let me quit. I tried for years, asking every grown up I came across. Needless to say, my parents won. Every adult I spoke to said “I wish I would have kept going.” Not only did I develop my own love for the piano, but I also went on to study music in college, perform on multiple stages worldwide, and even become a piano teacher myself.

We’ve all heard of the cognitive and physical benefits of learning an instrument as a child. We’ve heard how students who study an instrument for an extended period of time have improved grades and test scores, increased creativity, and stronger balance in left/right brain function. Even so, it can be very difficult when our kids refuse to practice or argue to quit taking lessons. The competition is fierce with the internet, video games, sports, and even school work. As a teacher, I encourage parents to push through and continue through those phases (which is exactly what they are) in setting non-negotiable standards for their children. I do, however, recognize the need to maybe switch to another instrument or introduce new musical genres into the students repertoire. Music teachers and parents can work together as these different stages of growth arise for the young musician.

There are always ways to keep it fresh!

    Encouraging Adult Music Students

At The Music Junction we enjoy having students of all ages and believe music making is a good hobby for everyone. After all, it is well documented how music lessons benefit older students with their memory.  So, if playing the piano or taking voice lessons was one of your new year’s resolutions but you’re a little uncertain about this new journey, do not fear! We’re here to help!

    You Can Do This!

The old saying is true, we are our own worst critic. Or as a music teacher told the New York Times, older people tend to “beat themselves up more” about their music abilities. Just relax and realize that being a student means you will make mistakes but you will get better. Teacher Brad Hubisz wants adults to remember something that is sometimes overlooked: “Adults are smarter than children!” He adds that older students have an easier time learning more theoretical-based concepts such as scales, chords and circle of fifths. Also, adults have a quicker grasp on learning sight reading tricks.

    You Should Practice But …

Perhaps more than children, adult students tend to feel bad when they show up for lessons unprepared. Maybe it was a busy week at work filled with late meetings. Perhaps, you had a few too many dinner parties with friends. Either way, your day quickly filled up and you had little time, or energy, to practice. Out of respect for the teacher’s time you cancel the lessons and hope to catch up in time for the next session.

Not so fast, says Music Junction owner Charissa Vaughan-Wheeler. She is a trained vocalist and pianist who is also learning how to play the guitar. She knows what it’s like to not practice. “Canceling actually has the opposite effect,” she says. “When students do that, they end up not practicing again for another week because they didn’t get the momentum back up again, and that’s when they start thinking about quitting.”

Piano Sales Decline While Research Continues To Prove That Music Benefits The Brain

Did you know that Americans buy approximately 35,000 pianos a year?

    Sounds good doesn’t it?

Well that figure does not come close to 1909, when U.S. households bought more than 300,000 pianos!

Times have changed, for sure. In 1909, the television had not yet been invented and most American households did not own a telephone. Today, there is television and a lot of other distractions including social media, mobile apps, sports and more.

Apparently, the plunge in sales is causing the closure of piano stores throughout the country. Is the shuttering due to a decline in people playing the piano? While, we’re sure there were a higher percentage of piano players in the early 1900s that is not exactly the problem. According to the Associated Press, lower-priced digital pianos and keyboards are a threat to stores that sell only traditional upright and grand pianos. They are also facing stiff competition from resale stores because older pianos continue to remain in great condition.

But not everything is bad. A Western Massachusetts news station reported that newer pianos integrate technology into their products, which enhance the learning process. Some record what the student is playing so they examine their finger work.

Tony Falcetti, of Falcetti Music told WWLP: “It’s the interaction of apps that helps with the teaching aspect of playing .. so there’s a lot of educational tools that we have today that we didn’t have previously.”

Remember, playing the piano can significantly improve your child’s literacy skills, emotional control and a lot more. It is also an opportunity to bring art in culture in your family’s life at a time when most schools cannot afford to bring these enriching experiences into the classroom.

Are Voice Lessons The Most Cost-Effective Type of Music Instruction?

When you think about music education do you think of children playing the piano or violin or do picture children singing do-re-mi?

    Chances are it’s the former.

It’s an unexplained bias in Western culture that a solid music education must include a musical instrument.

British music journalist Helen Wallace noticed this too and wonders why, in an era of reduced budgets for art instruction, so many people are advocating for the most expensive type of music instruction.

“The fact is that every child already has an instrument, cost-free: their own voice,” Wallace writes in Classical-music.com, an online publication of BBC Music Magazine. “If half the meagre resources currently available were spent on expertly-led choral singing in primary schools, every single child could experience music of a quality, variety and sophistication impossible to achieve with a motley collection of instruments played by children in the early stages of mastering them.”

Wallace has a valid point about cost.  Musical instruments designed for beginning learners cost at least a few hundred dollars. Parents eagerly scour Craigslist for pianos hoping to find a deal and, in another country, people work tirelessly to create instruments from landfill materials.

We’ve researched and tried to discern if there are unique benefits of instrumental instruction as opposed to vocal education but we could not find any information. It appears that any type of music instruction offers great benefits to children.

We offer piano and voice lessons at The Music Junction and see the benefits in both types of education. We also think that the most valuable type music instruction is the one that inspires you and makes you excited to practice be it voice or piano.
