    Classical Music Calms Dogs

Maybe there was a good reason Snoopy liked listening to Schroeder’s music.

A recent study revealed that classical music has a calming effect on dogs who are living in kennels. The report, published in the journal Physiology and Behaviour, found that dogs who were exposed to classical music had lower heart rates and displayed less anxious behavior than dogs who went about their day in silence.

Finding ways to soothe dogs is important topic to animal welfare advocates as it is well documented that long-term life in a kennel or shelter can cause stress and negative behavior, even mental illness among canines. Given that dogs can be boarded in a kennel as long as a year, finding ways to improve a dog’s quality of life is important.

Gilly Mendes Ferreira, education and research manager for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lead the research team on dog behavior.

“Although by the end of the week their heart rates and behaviour associated with kennel stress had returned to normal, the initial findings are very encouraging and show that classical music does have a positive impact on the dogs’ welfare,” Ferreira said. “We want to make each dog’s time with us as comfortable as possible and this research is at the very forefront of animal welfare.”

We know that classical music can assist you as you study for tests, help you get a date, and help you become more productive at work. It was only a matter of time before scientists started tracking these benefits to animals.

So, the next time you see Fido. Skip the bone and play some Mozart!

The Benefits of Singing in the Shower

Some people start their day with a cup of coffee while others read the newspaper. Still more, check their social media accounts. Do you know the best way to start your day is to sing in the shower?

According to Music.Mic, singing releases endorphins and oxytocin to the brain, which heightens your sense of pleasure and reduces anxiety. Singing is a great way to mentally prepare for a stressful day that may be filled with a demanding job or pressures from balancing your work and personal life. According to one of our latest blog posts, singing may be more beneficial than yoga.

As Music.Mic points out: “Those who sing are far less stressed, and that means their hearts do better in the long run.”

If you live with other musical people and can entice them for a group sing-along, you are in a better situation. Those who participate in group singing, such as  choirs, have raised immune competence meaning they are less likely to catch the next cold or flu that is spreading.

Also, the shower is a great place for everyone to sing because ceramic tiles do not absorb sound, making your voice bounce in every direction, according to Ryot. That adds power and volume to even the weakest singer.

So release those inhibitions (who cares what your family members think) and start belting out your favorite tunes.  Your body will thank you for it!

3 Reasons Non-Singers Should Take Voice Lessons

Think singing lessons are only for the young or those who have dreams of stardom? Think again! Our wonderful vocal students at The Music Junction run the gamut of ages and interests because they know the benefits of voice lessons extend beyond the microphone.

Here are a few examples of how voice lessons can enhance your life:

    1. Public Speaking – Singers who take lessons from a professional instructor learn proper posture as well as breathing techniques that enable them project to their voice and present themselves with confidence. These skills not only benefit singers and actors but a wide variety of careers. If you talk a lot in your job — such as a doctor, teacher, or yoga instructor — you could benefit from strengthening your vocal folds. Or, if your career ambitions include being a manager or executive who leads meetings and inspires workers, you may also benefit from singing lessons.

    2. Lower Stress – As strange as it may sound, singing has a calming effect that has been scientifically proven to be equal to practicing yoga.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Bjron Vickhoff of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden led the study and explained why:

“Song is a form of regular, controlled breathing, since breathing out occurs on the song phrases and inhaling takes place between these. It gives you pretty much the same effect as yoga breathing. It helps you relax, and there are indications that it does provide a heart benefit.”

There’s even a subset of yoga that incorporates singing into the yoga moves, which is a hard for us to imagine but we’d love to try it one day.

    3. Confidence – Tired of avoiding karaoke night or confining your singing to the shower or the car? At The Music Junction, we are firm believers that anyone can sing. It just takes time, practice and the willingness to break out of your comfort zone. Imagine how differently you’ll think of yourself after conquering this fear.
