Simply put, Melissa’s passion in life is music. She loves that it is a universal language that everyone can connect with, feel and enjoy in so many different ways. This is why she loves to teach and inspire. Melissa’s piano and voice students range from ages 4 to 86. It brings her so much joy to influence her students and to help them discover their innate musical talents and grow as musicians at any age.
Born in NYC and raised in the suburbs of northern NJ, Melissa was exposed to theater and the arts at a very young age. She started studying piano at 6 years old, and soon later started singing and performing in all her school musicals, show choirs, chamber groups and piano recitals.
Melissa has a B.A. in Music from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, with a background in Education. During her college career, she studied Music abroad for a semester at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Upon her return, Melissa was mentored by the late jazz bassist & composer Charles Fambrough who encouraged her to begin writing and recording in her own right. She performed regularly with her college’s jazz improv ensemble and a cappella group and was elected to be the group’s musical director until she graduated in 2005.
Since then, Melissa has been writing her own music, singing, playing the piano and performing professionally all while teaching piano and voice. As she loves working with kids, she became certified to teach “Music Together too”, a music program for children from birth through age 7.
In 2007, she released her debut record entitled “What Matters”, which was distributed in the US as well as Japan through Vivid Sound Corporation. While living in NYC, Melissa performed at many reputable music venues including the Blue Note Jazz Club, Rockwood Music Hall, the Cutting Room and the Bitter End. In August, 2014, she left New York and moved to LA to continue her music career on the west coast. She is happy to be a part of such a wonderful team of teachers at the Music Junction.
